Background
Malaysia Timber Industrial Board(MTIB) is responsible for
initiating development of the various sectors of the timber
industry and providing technical, marketing and other forms
of assistance to ensure their continued growth within a
rapidly industrialising Malaysian economy.
Problem Faced & Requirement
MTIB had problem in integrating their multiple systems from
different platforms into a central repository for Business
Intelligence(B.I) and Business Performance Management(BPM)
for their Management. At the same time, the Board needed
to implement a series of analysis and reports especially
to one of their departments named PSHEK. In PSHEK, the reports
were generated manually in MS Excel format. They also faced
the data discrepancies in their MCS system.
One of the objectives of this project
carried out by the Board using Speedminer technology has
been to develop an informative system, which provide both
MTIB users easy and free access to the reports in a central
and public place and to the public as well.
The Board needed to boost its capacity
for multidimensional analysis, and improve access to the
data being exported to MS office environment and scheduling
capacity. The another requirement of the Board for selecting
the tool was it must be easy to be implemented and user
friendliness.
The Board also required the solution to
have single sign-on technology.
For that reason, the Board decided to
set a plan in motion to provide business intelligence(B.I)
solutions for their Management, which were to give added
value to the existing applications.
Data Source
The main system involved in this project were MCS system
which is Oracle DBMS and MyFinance system which is in SQL
server DBMS. We had also integrated their data from Department
of Statistics Malaysia(in report format) and data in MS
Excel and MS Access. Other systems involved included their
Human Resource Management System and SISPEN.
Achievement
Many objectives have been met and many benefits obtained
through Speedminer solution. The most relevant has been
the creation of analytical reports automatically especially
to the PSHEK department which eliminates the manual work.
To integrate the many systems in different databases, this
is the success although not too hard but it was a success
for MTIB.
Speedminer also produce a centralized
place for MTIB to access their reports and analysis in a
portal. Now the public too can easily access to the MTIB
reports!
The creation of dashboard with analysis
especially top level analysis has served as an aid decision-making
tool for their Management.
With Speedminer, MTIB has been able to
identify data error and discrepancies in their MCS system.
Speedminer is able to serve as data checking platform and
data cleansing tool.
It took about six months to complete
the whole project include training and more than a hundred
reports and analysis has been completed.
Sample Type of Analysis
1. Export and Import information, report and analysis, regarding
the number of product exported, the volume, the FOB value
and to which destination and also trend analysis together
with forecasting.
2. Export and Import License approval information, report
and analysis, regarding the number of license approved with
and without physical inspection.
3. Export report and analysis, break down by bumiputera
and non bumiputera.
4. Top 10 analysis of exports, imports, exporters, importers,
export destination and etc.
5. Financial report analysis.
6. HR analysis and reports.
