Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) - The Malaysia Industrial Productivity Database (MIPD)

Background
Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) which was established under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) is a government agency that facilitates the national agenda of unlocking potentials of productivity.

Problem Faced & Requirement
One of the major data MPC maintained is the Malaysia Industrial Productivity Database (MIPD), a database with series of year, annual and quarter data covering productivity performance indicators of Malaysia at national level, manufacturing and services sector as well as selected countries for international comparison. Prior adopting Speedminer technology, reports were generated from MIPD manually in MS Excel format. Another challenge faced is data for international comparison is in PDF format in IMD World Competitiveness e-Yearbook. It is huge for 10 years as each year book consists of 500 pages. It was time consuming to convert both data from MIPD and IMD World Competitiveness e-Yearbook to analysis shared for public in their portal.

MPC also required a powerful analytics tool with interactive Business Intelligence reporting, analytics, dashboard, and data visualization.

Data Source
The main system involved in this project were MS Excel and MS Access, PDF etc.

Achievement
Speedminer has been used as a data warehouse to integrate data from sources mentioned above storing historical and current data. An overall dashboard based on 3 pillars namely productivity, competitiveness and methodology to display multiple analysis have been built. MPC users can also generate ad-hoc analysis using Analyzer features in Speedminer if this is not defined earlier. Public also can access to all analytics reports via this centralized platform, especially businesses and other government agencies can easily use the data to create value.

Its dynamic filtering by clicking enable users to vie productivity performance indicators by type, level, sector, period, country etc. both domestics and international comparison gives users an in-depth view on the importance of productivity in the nation’s economic growth and quality of life, overview of Malaysia’s economy and its competitiveness in the global market.

Instead of data in a standard table of rows and columns, in the past, Speedminer creates intuitive dashboard by displaying different type of charts (pie, line and bar) making users easy to decipher trends at a glance.
