Success Story: Data Migration for HIS@KKM Implementation at Sultan Ismail Hospital

Project Overview

Project Name: Data Migration for HIS@KKM Implementation at Sultan Ismail Hospital

Project Objectives:
The main objectives of this data migration project were:

  1. To retrieve historical data from HSI Cerner and Peoplesoft databases into a Data Retention database, allowing users to query and view past records.
  2. To create dashboards enabling user-friendly querying and viewing of historical data.
  3. To migrate essential historical data to the new HIS@KKM system, providing seamless access to prior records.

Data Sources

Initial Data Sources:
The project used an Oracle 9i database as the primary data source.

Data Volume:
Approximately 8TB of historical data was handled in this project.

Implementation Details

Tools & Technologies Used:
The project leveraged Speedminer, utilizing the Speedminer Web Application Framework and IRIS Data Platform for seamless data management and integration.

Integration Requirements:
REST API links were provided within the new HIS@KKM system, giving users easy access to historical data directly from the new platform.

Before and After Comparison

Challenges Before:
The original 8TB database couldn’t be restored from backups, requiring a direct migration from the live database. This process had to occur during off-peak hours, resulting in a prolonged data transfer period.

Improvements After:
Following implementation, users and doctors can view historical data directly within the HIS@KKM system via web links. Enhanced filtering options allow users to search for historical patient records, encounters, and orders, streamlining data access.

Data Retention

Types of Forms Built:
Custom dashboards were created to allow users to view and search through historical data in the Data Retention database.

Project Impact

Benefits to Organization:
The organization can now access historical Cerner and Peoplesoft data within HIS@KKM without the need for costly legacy database maintenance, leading to significant cost savings.

Benefits to End Users:
The new integration provides HSI users with seamless access to historical data from the Cerner and Peoplesoft systems directly within HIS@KKM, enhancing usability and continuity of care.

Lessons Learned

Success Factors:
The comprehensive functionality of the Speedminer Web Application Framework allowed the project team to address complex migration challenges effectively and quickly.

Challenges & Solutions:

  1. Processing long strings (exceeding 15 million characters) was resolved using a Java binding feature.
  2. Decrypting CLOB data from the Oracle database was managed using a custom algorithm, ensuring secure and accessible data handling.
